Updated: Tuesday, October 6, 2026
Mastic, New York, is a hamlet and census-designated place within the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, with a largely residential layout shaped by small-lot single-family neighborhoods and a commercial spine along Montauk Highway. The built environment includes detached homes, low-rise business frontage, and some vacant or undeveloped parcels, while the broader south-shore setting brings low-lying land and wetland edges near the Forge River and nearby bays. For housing consumers, the prevailing pattern is a network of residential streets with everyday services concentrated along the main corridors.
Daily-life anchors include the Town of Brookhaven Mastic Recreation Center on Herkimer Street and the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library system, with its main branch in neighboring Shirley. Suffolk County Transit's Route 66 follows Montauk Highway and connects toward the Mastic-Shirley Long Island Rail Road station, which provides a regional rail option toward New York City, while nearby Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge adds protected coastal forest, wetlands, and trails to the area's recreational context. Together, these civic resources and transportation links help frame practical choices around commuting, services, and access to open space.
